The collection stripped bare by its artists, even
The Collection Stripped Bare by its Artists, Even is an exhibition that represents a collection of repurchased works of Lab’Bel, artistic laboratory of Bel Group, a French multinational company. The laboratory works on two levels: constitution of a contemporary art collection, and production of exhibitions and artistic events in France and Europe. The exhibition was conceptualized six years after the laboratory was founded, and our task was to design the poster and the catalog.
The poster and the catalog maintain the concept of the exhibition that is based on the idea of disclosure. The upper part of the poster is shorter than the lower part that presents the artists’ works. The works are in this way being disclosed, just like the exhibition “discloses” the repurchased works. The front page of the catalog is also shorter than the parts that represent the artists’ works. Such ratio in dimensions continues throughout the entire catalog where different substantive, esthetic and functional elements intertwine. Substantively each page that is on the narrow side contains information about the artist and their works, while the page which is on the wider side contains exclusively the photographs of the works. Esthetically each narrow page separates the text from the photos and frees the presentation of artistic works from any kind of graphic elements, and functionally each narrow page takes the role of a bookmark.
